  • In celebration of its 250th anniversary Delivering for America: How the United States Postal Service Built a Nation chronicles the rich history of the USPS, from its colonial origins to its modern-day innovations. Through captivating stories and stunning visuals - many never-before-seen in print - you will gain a deeper understanding of not just the history of the mail, but of America itself.

You will learn of USPS roots in America’s striving for independence, as colonists established their own continental mail system to undermine Britain’s privacy invasion with its censorious Crown Post.

As the new country explores its frontier, you will see that the building of post roads turned game trails and Native American trade routes into the infrastructure over which citizens of different states exchanged ideas about what it ought to mean to be united.

You will hear the swashbuckling tales of a group of postal employees who drove a train full of gold from California back to the East Coast before economic calamity could befall the country, and of returning World War I pilots who delivered mail through the air in the days before modern instrumentation or even the ability to easily fly at night —and how, once, an emergency landing brought one pilot just inches from a cache of dynamite.

You’ll read letters home from soldiers abroad in the 20th century’s great conflicts and come to see how the post office was a civic touch point and a financial lifeline to many during the Great Depression. And you’ll be regaled with accounts of the Postal Service’s ceaseless ingenuity, including its early experiments with electric vehicles, automation, and, of course, email.
